CHARLI XCX: VROOM VROOM
SCORE: 96/100
Charli XCX and the iconic late legend SOPHIE - a unstoppable force that graced the music industry for a time that was unfortunately cut short. XCX's 'Vroom Vroom' EP showcases both her prowess and genuine love for good electropop; showing her utmost desire to put out an incredible & wild project while simultaneously showcasing her artistic excellence alongside the greatly talented SOPHIE backing the British pop diva & songstress with her eccentric production style.
From an outside perspective Charli dives into messy territory with her 2016 EP - delivering an unexpected and adventurous sound that is both bold and instantly memorable; it may take some time to warm up to, but it will hit you like a car when you do finally get around to loving it. 'Vroom Vroom' makes for an incredible opener that sets the basis for the entirety of the EP while showcasing the more electronic side of Charli's music that would come out swinging even more with some of her albums that came after the release of this EP. Her learning to experiment and steer away from traditional pop while working with SOPHIE allowed her to once again bloom into another artist, and this EP is a classic and somewhat early example of her genuine talent in the electropop scene.
SOPHIE's usage of unconventional soundscapes along with the autotuned and filtered vocal performances from Charli (alongside Hannah Diamond on 'Paradise) make for a project that is instantly ambitious and memorable on all fronts - with the production taking the front burner and making the project as incredible as it truly is while Charli makes it her own with her steamy charisma and developed persona.
It's a perfect showcase of SOPHIE and Charli's respective styles - with both of their energies bouncing off of one another for a project that is full of both undeniable chemistry and pure artistry in a more modernized and experimental form than what might've been expected from the popstar.
