SLAYER: REIGN IN BLOOD
SCORE: 97/100
Slayer's third album is the real start of their creative reign, with forcefully heavy tracks and guitar riffs that will leave you in a consistent, near 30-minute daze, 'Reign in Blood' is everything that an 80s metal album needed to be and more, all at the same time.
Being able to do so much in such a little amount of time shows that Slayer deserve their props to a very huge extent. Being able to make a short metal album that packs this much of a punch is a deeply impressive feat - and from someone who doesn't normally love 80s-era metal all too much in some cases, this is an incredible metal album. Slayer are a band I never really listened to before now, and it's safe to say that I'll be coming back to them in the very near future due to the sheer power and force of this album alone.
The songs are fast and unapologetically rough, the sound of the album is immediately in your face and the band gives you no time to breath as the album carries on quickly and with a rapid, rough approach at every turn. The songs are sharp and very well composed, the jagged instrumentals coming together into one gorgeously heavy symphony that would make any people who don't like metal faint.
Slayer did things that most metal bands could still only dream of doing with their 1986 album - it doesn't overstay its welcome, and it makes itself more than just known in the 28 minutes it runs for. There isn't a dull moment to be found on 'Reign in Blood', and it's a perfect genre-introductory album if you're looking to get into metal.
This album is without a doubt for anyone looking to listen to more metal, and I regret not getting to this one sooner. This is an absolute essential album in any genre, and it goes to show just what it was that made Slayer such a great band. They were on top of the game with this album, and every turn is just as impressive as the last.
'Reign in Blood' is impressively consistent - without faltering in quality or missing a beat, the album provides listeners with one of the most immersive heavy metal experiences one can get their hands on. The LP is so strikingly polished without it feeling "too" clean for what it is, and it finds the perfect balance between all over the place and knowing where it stands.
The album has a clear sense of knowing the exact direction and sound that it wants to have, and it's clear that the band worked together incredibly well during this time especially. Their playing is immaculately consistent and enjoyable to listen to, and the overall sound of this album is striking in all of the most important ways.
