KYLIE MINOGUE: KYLIE MINOGUE
SCORE: 100/100
Minogue's second self-titled project feels like her most Madonna-esque record, with elements of trip hop and house/art pop fusion coming together into one of her most fleshed out projects. 'Kylie Minogue' manages to have much more depth than any of her previous albums, branching off of the sounds found on her 1991 album while marking a complete shift in her style and image; opting for a more mature, artsy sound that makes this album stick out like a diamond in her discography.
It feels like the gateway into what would make her later albums so great - a massive level of experimentation being present within a clearly-catered image that makes Kylie feel like an entirely new spirit within this album. It's a more interesting and enjoyable effort to 'Impossible Princess' (which follows a similar sound structure in some cases), and it manages to be one of her most impressive efforts.
Longer tracks allow for carefully-crafted grooves to ride out right alongside Minogue, with the songs coming together into one work of art pop & R&B masterclass. From the more upbeat to the downtempo ballads, 'Kylie Minogue' has it all and then some added on top of it just to showcase how incredible Kylie truly is as an artist.
The shifts in tone throughout the album keep it fresh and full of genuine life and emotions, with the songs each following their own structure while working together to build the album up into something even bigger. It's a gorgeous and surprising showcase of Minogue's artistry at its fullest point, and it's an album you simply can't let pass you by.
This feels like something made by someone who is more than just a popstar - and Kylie truly is more of an artist than anything. The experimental nature of this album is both deeply interesting and enjoyable every step of the way, and it's a completely enchanting project that will leave you completely spellbound.
The sensual synths and refined production make this album feel like one trippy, sexy dancefloor - the energy is palpable, and it's Kylie's sexiest project without a doubt in terms of production alone. Kylie's sultry whispers and vocal performances feel similar to what Britney Spears would go on to do on 'In The Zone' - and this album feels like a gateway drug to other similar artists who would go down the same path of experimentation.
