JACK OFF JILL: SEXLESS DEMONS AND SCARS

SCORE: 89/100

The most unique thing about Jack Off Jill's sound easily comes from the vocal performances throughout their music, with this album having more of a "cute" vocal style that makes the screaming moments hit that much harder. The instrumental sound of the band is cohesive and strikingly enjoyable; and both the instrumentals and vocals come together into one angry pile of striking punk music by a refreshingly feminine band.

This album feels like a huge bomb (filled with glitter) going off right in front of your face. It's a huge spectacle that shows off exactly what the band is about while giving unique glimpses into their style and paving the way for their next project. This album sets an extremely high bar for the rest of their catalogue; and rightfully so.

The alternative riot grrrl sound of this album sets these girls apart from other bands within their genre by a huge amount. The sound of this album isn't afraid to be silly and poke fun at others while holding a sense of expertise and rage that makes this being their first album that much more impressive. Their sound is angry and full of a sense of grit that only an early project like this one could ooze like this - and the album comes together incredibly well with a huge sense of consistency for something with such an all over the place approach.

'Sexless Demons and Scars' uses both a somewhat nonsensical approach and a heavy-hitting rage-induced approach that make this album so versatilely impressive. It's deeply enjoyable and feels like something of a hidden gem due to it's general lack of attention; and there's no doubt in my mind about Jack Off Jill being one of the best all-girl bands that the rock scene has to offer. Their career may have been short, but just this album alone proved this on a very large and impressive scale.

They expanded upon the ever-growing riot grrrl scene and managed to make it their own. In the world of female punk (even now), it's Jack Off Jill's world - and we're all just living in it.
