KMFDM: TOHUVABOHU

SCORE: 91/100

Fifteen full-length albums in and the band has still got it - despite being released in 2007, 'Tohuvabohu' still sounds just as fresh as their other works, and it is undoubtedly one of their most underlooked projects.

The slight issue with 'Tohuvabohu' is how it lacks the same captivatingly heavy/high energy that their other projects possess. Although it does pick up, the album starts on a lower note that may make it seem less appealing than it is in actuality - but the end result is striking.

Despite starting off on one of their weakest notes (especially for a band that does openers so well; which is even more ironic with the KMFDM-glory quotes scattered throughout 'Superpower', which might just be one of their weakest songs in terms of energy), 'Tohuvabohu' redeems itself enough to be enjoyable. It's a lot less heavy and hard-hitting than some of their other albums, but songs like 'Looking For Strange' with memorable choruses and striking synth arrangements make this album stick out from the rest of their discography; largely due to how unique it is.

Both the heavier and lighter elements come together into one completely kickass flurry of sounds, and 'Tohuvabohu' is yet another boastful triumph that showcases a strong sense of charisma and gritty energy through and through.

'Tohuvabohu' is highly driven on synth-filled ambition, with gorgeous synth lines and striking industrial soundscapes that will make your head buzz. The sound of this album carries on with the band's style while still making something new and completely reinvented, and it's a stunning end result. It becomes much more promising as it warms up and builds into something bigger; and it's yet another highly worthwhile endeavor from KMFDM.
