PINKPANTHERESS: FANCY THAT
SCORE: 94/100
Now this is a project exciting enough to get me there the day it releases.
PinkPantheress continues her lush, girly approach to drum and bass with synth-driven breaks and soft singing that compliment her image to perfection. 'Fancy That' is so stylized no other artist could even dream of making anything quite like it - and Pink makes it clear that it comes to her naturally.
This mixtape has helped to fine-tune her image even more than it already once was. She has a much more polished style while still staying true to herself - and it's clear that she's somehow improved and refined her musical palate even more since her last effort. Her clear ear for sampling and interpolating iconic artists (Basement Jaxx, Panic! At the Disco) and making these sounds her own is deeply impressive - and 'Girl Like Me' is one of her best songs to date.
'Fancy That' mixes club beats with something much more inspired than most. There's a clear sense of artistry that shines through a massive amount on this project; and Pink's style is even more impressive than ever before. Her reinvention of her public image while still keeping her same persona and musical style is highly impressive - and she mixes new and old sounds to make something completely rejuvenating.
This tape contains some of the best production used in any of her music so far - with the synths on tracks like 'Stars' being particularly impressive and immersive at every turn. The seamless blend and meshing of dance-pop and drum and bass sounds is something only she could pull off this well, and 'Fancy That' feels like one dance party that never stops. The transitions are something to stick around and marvel at, and the sequencing of the project as a whole is truly stunning.
'Fancy That' is much more than just pleasing. Pink uses the 20 minute runtime to her advantage - making serviceable dance music that does much more than just give the people something to move to. It's a project that has genuine lyrical prowess and striking production that will leave this as one of 2025's most stunning projects without a doubt.
It's a project that both fans of pop and drum and bass can get behind without a hitch - and Pink shows that she isn't going anywhere anytime soon; she's here to stay and her reign is still just beginning.
